The building featured in August of the Belleville Historical Society’s 2026 Seeing Belleville Through Stained Glass Calendar is St. George Episcopal’s Church.

An Episcopalian congregation had worshiped in Belleville in the 1860s but disbanded. Renewed interest in the denomination in 1880 led to the establishment of a mission church, which met in different locations. Completion of St. George’s Episcopal Church in 1883 provided a permanent home for Belleville Episcopalians.

The building, a Gothic structure, has rolled stained glass windows that were made in St. Louis. The windows and pews of ash and cherry cost $5,000 at the time of construction. In 1991, the Episcopalians built a larger church that reflected the Gothic style adjacent to the original building. The new sanctuary also housed St. Mark Lutheran Church (Evangelical Lutheran Church of America), which the Episcopalians had hosted since 1981.
