Seeing Belleville Through Stained Glass: June 2026

The home featured in June of the Belleville Historical Society’s 2026 Seeing Belleville Through Stained Glass Calendar is a home on Abend Street that originally belonged to Johanna and Irvin Wangelin.

Wangelin, a young business executive and insurance agent, bought a substantial residence on Abend Street in 1890 for his wife Johanna and their growing family. Soon after, he replaced the house with a Queen-Anne style mansion and continued to modify it. The large stained-glass window in the stairwell was added after it was created at the St. Louis World’s Fair in 1904.

The Romanesque-style keyhole entrance dates to about 1905. In the 1950s, the home was converted to apartments, but it is currently being renovated as a single-family home. Wangelin’s business ventures also evolved. He became a pioneer automobile dealer on East Main Street in a building now occupied by the Community Kindness Resale Shoppe.
